Jetting Pigs-Oil Pipeline

HORIZON Industrial supplies Bi-Directional Sand Jetting Pigs to an Oil and Gas producer located in Western Australia.

Bi-Directional Pigs are also known as ‘Mechanical or Mandrel Pigs’. The construction of the Pig consists of a flanged steel mandrel (body) onto which Polyurethane Sealing Discs, Guide Discs, Scraper Discs and Spacer Discs are fitted using Bolts and nuts to secure them in position. Other components such as Wire Brushes, Magnets, Cups etc.. can also be fitted to mechanical pigs.

The Bi-Directional Sand Jetting Pig incorporates specially designed Sealing and Scraper Discs with by-pass (Jetting) facility. The pigs are used to remove sand deposits, wax and other debris from the crude oil pipeline. The frequency of Pigging operations varies but usually the pipeline is pigged at least once a month and sometimes more frequently depending on the flow rate and pressure drop performance figures.

Pig selection is critical toward achieving the desired result when cleaning any pipeline and various factors will influence the selection process such as

  • Pipeline Size
  • Pipeline Material
  • Type of build up (debris) present in the pipeline
  • Length of the pipeline
  • Frequency of Pigging Operations
  • Pressure and Flow Rate
  • Entry and Exit points
  • Pig Handling and Maintenance requirements
  • Safety and Environmental considerations

Spare parts are maintained on site to ensure the pigs are always available.
